Our Philosophy

In simplest terms, we're young farmers—in fact, if you read the "About..." sections, you'll see that our path to 236 Bear Creek Drive wasn't exactly straight.

But our love of plants and animals, our interest in environmental sustainability, and our enjoyment of the outdoors have always shaped our lifestyle, and as we thought about what fulfills us, it became obvious that we wanted a hands-on connection to our own piece of land—and to a community that values its local economy, its families and its rural heritage. Vibrant Northeast Iowa is just such a place.

We began building Grass Run Farm because we wanted to live closer to our necessities and help revitalize small-scale American agriculture. We firmly believe that the foods we eat should be wholesome, safe, and raised locally by environmentally sustainable methods.

Farming on any scale is hard work, though—as any seasoned hand will tell you—and we've chosen to complicate the farm-building process by holding up ideals of organic land and livestock management. Are we fully organic yet? No—it's a long process that involves everything from buying our brood stock from producers whose practices we trust, to building partnerships with neighbors to raise more of our own grass and grains—without conventional pesticides, herbicides or genetically modified seed.

All in all, we're constantly working to improve our systems and accommodate those of others whom we impact—including those who may not share our views.

It's no secret that success generally advances slowly, like the seasons, and we're proud to say we're in this profession with our whole hearts for the duration.

By purchasing directly from us you help support conscientious animal production and the family farm. Together we may ultimately bring affordable and diverse food systems closer to home.

Along the way, your comments and criticisms are always welcome. We never cease to be amazed by what blossoms from earnest conversation.
